Appalachian State University’s college footballers are known as the ‘Mountaineers‘ or Appalachian State Football team. They started playing football in 1928 competing independently until 1931 when they joined the NAIA North State Conference. Appalachian State football soon made their mark on the game. Within their first 7 years they were led to two post season bowl games.

The home of Appalachian State is Kid Brewer Stadium in Boone, North Carolina. Kid Brewer coached the Mountaineers in 1937 where they had an incredible unbeaten and un-scored upon regular season. Since 1972 they have been a competing member of the Southern Conference and are a Division One Football Championship Subdivision member of the NCAA.

The playoffs in the FCS began in 1978 and since that time Appalachian State is the only football team to have won three consecutive national championships. They also have the same record for a Division One team since 1946 when Army achieved the same feat. They are acclaimed for being the first Division One team in recent years to win three consecutive undisputed national titles and the first FCS squad in the final Associated Press college football poll to receive votes. In 2008 an Appalachian State Football Mountaineer, Armanti Edwards, became the first ASU Walter Payton Award recipient. This is an award for the most impressive offensive player. Jerry Moore the legendary coach of the Mountaineers also broke Southern Conference records by being the first coach to take home a 6th Coach of the Year award, this being the most ever.
